The deck functions as an extension of the house's living space without impacting the footprint of the project as the owners required a large entertaining space as part of their work. While the deck started as a compromise to keep the project's square footage as compact as possible it has developed into a major feature of the home as the weather permits almost year round use, and the views are breathtaking. The deck was built using sustainably harvested IPE wood - a wood well suited to the harsh conditions of the desert. The deck tiles, while aesthetically beautiful, also allow for easy maintenance of the roof and drains. All materials used on the roof are potable compatible as the water drains into cisterns which provide the drinking water for the house. The house can collect over 24,000 gallons of rain water per year. The deck also provides visitors with an up close view of the Photo Voltaic Panels and Solar Hot Panel. |
